Social On Main

This is the place where all the real fun takes place. I honestly didn’t even know this bar existed until I was just another person invited to someone else’s birthday party. Two women from my mom’s padel group were double celebrating their birthdays and had invited everyone from their padel group. My mom was excited for the Bingo night and invited me along, with one of my friends.

I had imagined it to be a bit boring, with a few middle-aged to old people playing at a bar. I never expected to have as much fun as I did that night. I made friendly chatter with other people at the table, being the social butterfly that I am and was also feeling excited for the Bingo night to begin.

While we were waiting, the birthday girls were passing little face stickers, which I happily took and began placing on my face. It was exactly what I needed to complete my Euphoria makeup look and felt I did a good job. It’s difficult to pull of a Euphoria makeup look without the little face gems and jewels that stick on, so being able to do that made me feel like a new character in the series.

It was fun putting stickers on my face and my mom joined in and had a cute butterfly on her cheek.

The host for the evening of the quiz night was a breath of fresh air. A drag queen called Adam. He was absolutely magnificent. I was in pure admiration of everything about him; from his fantastic makeup to his aura and energy. He was hilarious too which kept the people entertained. I was actually so surprised and disappointed that no one had ever told me to visit Social on Main before. I felt I had been missing out on so many good times all these years (of being in my early twenties).

Nevertheless, I was glad to have discovered its existence, even if it was accidental. I realized that Bingo truly did rely on luck, that there was no special skill involved.

I wanted nothing more than to win. As we know, I generally win at everything (especially axe-throwing competitions). But other people were drunk and interrupting my concentration by asking me to help them cross off what they had and in the end had about two or three other Bingo cards to deal with.

The prizes were diabolically silly, from a vacuum I believe, to a strange, small dancing cactus light and a box of cereal. I wasn’t extremely sad when I didn’t win, but it would have been nice to just experience the feeling.

I did also attempt to play musical chairs halfway through the Bingo night and was sure I would win, but with Rose swirling around in your system and uncomfortable cowgirl boots, you definitely have more chance of falling on your hind. Which I did. A girl was quick and she pulled the chair from under me (which I am sure is cheating but sadly Adam did not seem to care).

So, as one of the few losers, I was offered a depressingly small caramel vodka shot and was lucky enough to receive a hug and a compliment from Adam. He was telling the whole bar what a nice set of teeth I have. At least I know my smile will win me more things in life than musical chairs ever would.

I never wanted the evening to end, even when Bingo had ended and there was a final winner announced for the strange vacuum or toaster or whatever it was. Adam was not just hosting; he was singing too! It was amazing. I would definitely consider having my next birthday bash there and it does seem quite popular for birthdays. And maybe when I have some time I shall revisit in the near future.

What a delightful, joyous evening that should have gone on forever. Social On Main in Bryanston, Johannesburg is calling your name and I think you should answer.
