A unique, tailless little Pomeranian that has the affects of a royal princess and the soul of an angel. Gracie is my mother’s dog, to be clear, but has a very special place in all of our hearts. She is one of the happiest animals I have ever come across. She is sweet, playful, doesn’t mind getting dirty outside and is highly intellectual.
She follows my mother like a loyal little dog, day in and day out, until my mother goes away and leaves the country for a while. This is the first time I have witnessed it for myself. It was quite sad at first, because you could see she knew what was happening and her eyes were actually watering the day my mother was balling her eyes out and saying goodbye to Gracie.
It made me wonder how sad Shadow was when I used to come and go from the yachts, how he would be on the day I left and promised him each time I would come back. And I did come back, every time. I noticed that Gracie was down for a few days, but eventually settled with the fact and found a new person to follow around; my mother’s partner.
I don’t think this takes away from the fact that she misses my mother terribly because I will put a lot of money on it that Gracie will ditch him the moment my mother returns home. My mother is Gracie’s person and that’s the end of that. She has just cleverly adapted to her circumstances and is patiently waiting, like myself, for my mom to return home. I think Gracie and I are similar in that way, where the days just pass by, each day getting closer and closer to the time when my mom comes home.
We have adapted in a way that makes time pass by quickly, quicker than we would have thought. Despite this similarity, Gracie hardly acknowledges me anymore and I have become just another person she is used to. What I am saying is that towards me, and my aunt actually, she has become a snob. Only scouring my aunt’s house for leftover cat food and peering in my room every now and then just to be nosy before turning her nose up at me.
It’s interesting watching such a small animal be so nonchalant towards you, because you don’t expect it. But she is. And that’s okay. I have six other dogs who love and appreciate me and my two beautiful cats and not to mention my orphan horses. I believe the whole dynamic with Gracie will change when my mother returns home in a month’s time.
Let me explain why is tailless; she and my mother used to have a little game that whenever my mom came home from somewhere, she would race Gracie in the car from the gate to the parking spot of her car, which isn’t a far distance, and Gracie would race alongside, until one day, she accidentally went under the car’s tires….
She is actually a living and breathing miracle. I was, once again, away when this happened, I believe it was 2024, and my mother was absolutely devastated and went through stages of guilt, stress and an insurmountable amount of hope. Gracie was rushed to the vet and ended up staying there for about 3-4 weeks. She had major intestinal surgery and unfortunately had to have her tail amputated but came home recovered and well. Truly a miracle. They stopped racing since the incident.
Gracie also suffers from a gastrointestinal function and cannot control when she does her business. Life has been adjusted around that and I can see how grateful my mom is that she is still alive and well. A scary accident that could have killed her ended up making her stronger for the better.
She had lost her spark in the beginning and she would genuinely feel embarrassed, yes, animals feel embarrassment, whenever she did mess herself, but my mother is always so patient and kind to her that she is now over it and has regained her spark, a long time ago. She eats special food for her gastrointestinal problem and can only eat that, otherwise she gets a runny stomach very quickly.
Overall, Gracie is a sweet and highly intelligent (too much for her own good) Pomeranian that adores my mother and who worships the ground she walks on, which is actually very cute. Despite what she has been through in her little life, she has courage, resilience, strength and understanding of things that go beyond surface level. She is no ordinary Pomeranian, she is a little angel that was sent from heaven to comfort my mother during the times I was away.
