Journal Prompts for Self-Discovery

Journaling may seem overwhelming at first, but is worth the confusion and revelations that come with it. I briefly touched on the topic of journaling in a previous blog about digital detoxing and thought I would expand on it in a new blog and provide a few helpful journal prompts.

Journaling has always been my favourite way of releasing fears, anger, happiness and a way to work through all my emotions. Journaling is not only great for the mind, but it is a great way to slow down, to work through our human complexities and be in the present moment simultaneously.

It’s also not only the best way to permanently preserve memories,  but also to reflect on our experiences as well as make a larger space for personal growth. You don’t have to keep the journal entries, you can do what you feel is best such as burning them. Some people are anxious that others may read their deepest and darkest thoughts, some may feel it best to release it after it’s been written and what better way than to burn the pages/journal?

I personally keep mine, as sentimental value, to one day sift through the pages that I write now and view the changing and growing of myself from the older version of myself.

Journaling is beneficial for many reasons as it allows us to view and recognise personal patterns we may have otherwise missed, and also to reflect on our goals, aspirations, achievements and setbacks no matter how big or small. Once we pinpoint what it is we want to do with our lives, how we wish to live, we can then expand to making our plans and evolving to be the best versions of ourselves. The best way to do that is, ultimately, through journaling. To write down our dreams and goals, is to admit that we want something to fulfill us, to get the cogs turning in our brains to start working towards those dreams and goals.

And if you are not sure what dreams and goals you have and you feel lost and clueless, you can journal to figure out what it is you really want, what you truly desire. Through a mountain of questions, you can uncover your destiny. It may take some time, patience and working through denials and frustrations, but you can get there. It’s not always easy opening up, even to ourselves. To admit our fears and anxieties, even on paper, is sometimes scary. But it is healthy, necessary and I believe the world would be a much better place if everyone just journaled and channeled their thoughts and feelings onto paper. Alas, not everyone is the writing type.

When it comes to journaling, there is absolutely no right or wrong way of going about it. You don’t have to put pen to paper, although I highly recommend it as the world is already so technology-driven but you can go about it which ever way makes you happy. You don’t need a fancy journaling routine, simply an intention and somewhere to put your thoughts.
